THE "HOPKINS HONOR AWARD": Presented by Coach Greg Kelly, a Johns Hopkins Alum and a four year player of the heralded Division l program there, winning a NCAA National Championship in 1987 playing alongside and against some of the greatest players in the game like Dave Petriemala, Quint Kessenick and the Gait Brothers, Gary and Paul. Modeled after the Lizards High School Teams "Wooden Stick Award", the award, a 1989 NCAA logo dyed head on a game used wooden shaft, from the Johns Hopkins appearence in the 1989 Championships, will be presented at the end of each season to the Middle School player who best exemplifies Lacrosse in its true form. This years winner of 2008 is Hunter Fuhr who has received the stick (a beauty!) and a trophy cup with his name on it to display for the year. ------------------------------------------ The Girls Lacrosse "Gary Gait Golden Globe Award" symbolized by an autographed yellow womens lacrosse ball signed by, without much doubt, the best player in the game. In his first year as a Head Coach of the Syracuse Womens team (his alma mater), after taking lacrosse to new heights in every aspect, even previously as a womens Assistant Coach at The University of Maryland. The award will be presented each season by Coach Paul to the girl who upholds the highest standards of respect, sportsmanship and comraderie in embracing the culture of the Girls Game of Lacrosse. This years winner of 2008 is Mallory Locke. -------------------------------------- "The Legend of the Wooden Stick Award" At the conclusion of each lacrosse season, from its inception in January of 2006, an award is presented by the Lizards Head Coach, Paul Balboni, to a player on the High School team who best represents the spirit of a lacrosse player in the eyes of the coaching staff. Lacrosse is much more than a sport, it is an ancient game of honor, integrity, respect, and character. Players eligible for this award should respect all those involved, from teammates, to opponents, referees, coaches, and fans. Never letting his teammates down, never giving up, cheering both in the game and on the bench, and working as hard in practice as he does in games, displaying good sportsmanship and promoting the game of lacrosse on and off the field of play. The actual award, an old, wooden shaft, STX Laser High Wall model lacrosse stick - game used for many games in the mid 1980's by Coach Paul - is symbolic of the original wooden crosses hand carved by the North American Indians and used in the "Field of Battle". The shaft of the stick was hand signed "DSOC Lax Award Ryan Powell 22", by one of the best lacrosse players in the game today. One of Syracuse Colleges great # 22's, Ryan Powell autographed the stick at a Powell Brothers Lacrosse Camp in Clearwater, Florida attended by Coach Paul and two Lizards Team members Joel Huffman and Marshall White III, in November of 2005. The first recipient of the award honored at the end of the year banquet in March 2006 was Andy Hood. John Wunderlich won the award for the 2007 season. Wes Mancil won the award in 2008. All Lizards team members are encouraged to strive for the Wooden Stick Award and model their play on and off the field to honor the "Game of the Creator". ---------------------------------------------
